Wandering, weeding, and scattering the primary seeds that would eventually become a productive veg patch, Slack found solace. She rebuilt her career, a new life.
She writes, “Without sounding overly glib about this, part of the reason I love vegetables so much is that they have been my saviors,” in her first guide, From the Veg patch.
It chronicles a year in the garden and highlights her ten favorite things to grow and the most exciting ways to eat them. She has now created a podcast with the same name, where she aims to provide “15 minutes of rural tranquility” for her listeners.

How did you get to where you are now?
Although I am unsure if I would advocate despair and burnout as a way to discover your true purpose in life, it was the push I needed to change things, even if it was a little dramatic. Buying Instagram Followers
I longed for nation life and the idea of rising. However, my only knowledge of this was from a few fuchsias in pots at my basement window in London and binge-watching River Cottage. It was a refuge for me when I was sick.
After my recovery, I had no grand plans to change careers or become a food author. I did the things I enjoyed, was happy to have fun again with something, and was thankful for the freedom and safety that allowed me to do so. I worked in my kitchen, then at a cookery college.
I then began to write a little bit, started photographing vegetables, and just kept going, learning and loving the process. I was there for the enjoyment. Buying Instagram Followers
It’s tempting to tell a simple story – that you received better, got higher, and have a new, shiny, healthy life. But it’s not. Life is not Instagram. My life was not a linear progression. There were many twists, turns, ups, and downs along the way.

What effect does it have on your mental well-being to be in the garden and cook your greens?
It’s magic. It’s not only calming but also energizing and provoking. Seeing nature continue on its own can be very comforting, making my worries seem more minor.
You also have company. To see a tiny seed turn into a large plant can be very inspiring. The harvests give me ideas and inspiration, so it’s the perfect mix. Buying Instagram Followers
Name three of your biggest backyard mistakes and tell us what you learned from them.
1. It is better to think bigger.
Before I built my small raised mattress kitchen backyard, I could see a few different areas growing on smallholdings of friends. Although the former were large, about three to four times the size of my house plot, I prefer growing small and rising at home. Viewing the vegetables from the kitchen window is more accessible and more inspiring.
2. I can run faster than I can walk.
I was a novice at growing vegetables when I started. I tried to grow technically complex crops, such as melons or cauliflowers. It would have been much better to start small and then have some success.
3. Growing potatoes.
Although I know it will be controversial, I don’t blame you. They are small and easy to use, but they can take up much of your space. They are often sold in stores and don’t look much better than those bought at home. Buying Instagram Followers
I don’t eat potatoes. High-quality is better if you have a lot of space. However, I have crossed them off my rising list.
Which 12-month period is your favorite for growing and cooking vegetables?
The heavens are in late August and early September. The harvests are excellent, and there aren’t many other tasks than watering and weeding. Buying Instagram Followers
The summer crops, including courgettes, aubergines, and beans, are in full swing. However, the autumn crops such as kale, different brassicas, and other brassicas are just beginning to arrive.
How organized do you have to keep the vegetable patch in good shape?
Do you do it full-time, or are you more casual? Is it necessary to plan your entire life around harvesting and planting?
I tend to go with the flow. Although I have a planting plan, I don’t always stick to it. I find myself distracted by things like x packets I see in the store and want to buy them. Buying Instagram Followers
However, I do plan my holidays around the patch. It is hard to imagine why you would leave in July when there are large harvests, and the patch needs a lot of watering. Who could leave a tomato plant at such a critical stage?
