IELTS Writing Module
In the IELTS Writing – Academic and General Training Tests, you will be given two assignments. Task 1 asks you to write 150 words while in Task 2 you have to write 250 words.
These writing tasks are examined according to the following four criteria – Completion of the task (for task 1)/Response to the task (for task 2), Coherence and cohesion, Lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy. Here, grammar makes up nearly 25% of your total writing grade.
So, no matter how good your vocabulary is, you won’t be able to generate meaningful and interesting content if your grammar isn’t good.

IELTS Speaking Module
Like IELTS Writing, the Speaking test is also assessed based on four main criteria: Fluency and Consistency, Lexical Resources, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Thus, grammar accounts for up to 25% of your IELTS speaking score.

Follow Grammar Rules
Verb Tense
Use the present simple when talking about general, repetitive and permanent aspects
To talk about ongoing or progressive actions, use Simple Continuous Tense
Use the past simple to describe events that happened in the past and have no relevance in the present
Use Present Perfect Tense for events that happened in the past but still have a connection to the present
Voice
Use passive voice to sound more formal and impersonal
Modal verbs
- ‘Could’, ‘Might’ and ‘May’ are the modal verbs used to denote uncertain actions of the future
- Use them to describe different shades. For example, when you want to express degrees of certainty
- ‘Could have’, ‘Might have’ and ‘May have’ are used to express possible actions in the past or present
- ‘Can’ is used to write possible general statements about the present
Definite Article
“The” is used to describe one of something in a specific area. For example, the river, the bridge
It is also used to describe cardinal numbers (first, second), superlatives (best), places that refer to a group of states.
Use ‘le’ wisely before nouns and abstract nouns.
Adjectives
Appropriate use of adjectives often indicates a candidate’s wide range of vocabulary in the speaking and writing modules. You can describe people, things and places or compare those using adjectives. Thus, you have to follow some rules for adjectives in writing IELTS test.
- For comparison you can take ‘-er’ and for the superlative you can take ‘-est.’ at the end of a word.
- We moved to a safer place.
- It’s the safest place in town.
- Two- and three-syllable adjectives use “more” and “most” to form comparative and superlative.
- She looks prettier than I expected.
Prepositions
Adequate knowledge of prepositions is necessary in order to avoid confusion regarding the use of different prepositions with the same word.
