Tips for maintaining healthy eyesight

The eyes are the windows to the soul. They enable us to view the wonderful world we are living in. Eyesight enables you to see clearly. A 6/6 vision is described as “normal” eyesight. A 6/6 vision means that a person is able to see details from 6 meters (20 ft) away. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated that 21 million Americans have vision problems. And about 80 million have eye diseases that can eventually result in blindness.

Types of Vision Defects

Nearsightedness: it is also called Myopia. In this condition, you can see objects near you clearly but the objects at distance are blurred. This condition can be treated with glasses or contacts.

Farsightedness: it is also known as Hyperopia. This condition is the opposite of near-sightedness. In this condition, you will be able to clearly see the objects that are far away, and the objects which are near you will appear blurry. This condition can be treated with glasses or contacts, the same as myopia.

Presbyopia: This defect usually occurs by getting older. People in the age of 40s usually face this defect. In presbyopia, the condition of the eye lens changes and becomes less flexible than before resulting in difficulty focusing on objects.

Astigmatism: in this condition, the front surface of the eye (cornea) or the lens inside the eye has mismatched curves, thus making the surface “egg-shaped”. This results in making your vision blurred at all distances. This can lead to eye strain, headaches, discomfort, blurred/distorted vision, night vision problems, etc. Astigmatism can be treated by wearing good eyewear and contacts.

Macular Degeneration: in this condition, the central part of your retina or the area in the back of the eye which sends and receives images get deteriorated and the person will see a gray/black dot in the center of the eyesight which slowly becomes larger. This condition is one of the leading causes of loss of vision.

Cataract: in this condition, your eye lens becomes cloudy and can affect either one or both eyes. A cataract is usually a result of aging or meeting with an accident. It can also be due to surgery, genetics, chronic illnesses, and medications.

Glaucoma: in this condition, the optic nerve is affected. Is Glaucoma results in the eventual loss of peripheral vision. Glaucoma is a slowly progressing defect and there are no notable signs. Usually, people do not notice the changes until they reach an advanced stage of Glaucoma. Glaucoma can be checked by eye pressure measurement diagnosis. Vision loss due to glaucoma cannot be recovered.
